Scandlines' zero-emissions ferry project, which will create the world's largest hybrid electric ferry, will be powered by an advanced 10MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) from Leclanché.

Leclanché SA is one of the world's leading energy storage solutions companies and a pioneering supplier of lithium-ion battery designs for electric and hybrid marine vessels. Leclanché is among several well-respected companies selected to provide critical components, techniques, and expertise for the PR24 (Puttgarten Rødby 2024) vessel, including Norwegian companies Kongsberg Maritime and Norwegian Electric Systems (NES). The freight ferry was designed by LMG Marin AS, Norway, and will be built at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey.

The 'RoPax' (roll-on-roll-off) freight ferry will operate in 2024. It will connect the Puttgarden ferry port on the German island of Fehmarn with the Rødby ferry port on the island of Lolland in Denmark - a distance of 18.5 km.

Battery

The battery technology chosen for the Scandlines PR24 freight ferry is among the most advanced and safest used in marine battery systems. Leclanché is one of the few battery system suppliers to manufacture its lithium-ion battery cells to exacting standards at its German manufacturing facility. In addition, Leclanché manufactures modules on its state-of-the-art automated assembly line in Yverdon, Switzerland. As a result, Leclanché's Marine Rack System (MRS) helps ship owners and operators meet international SOx and NOx emissions constraints.

The MRS BESS technology is modular, scalable, and meets the highest safety standards with its integrated cooling and active safety systems. In addition, Leclanché's liquid-cooled battery systems offer numerous advantages over air-cooled batteries, such as improved safety, faster charging, longer life, smaller footprint, and lower energy consumption.

Leclanché will provide a state-of-the-art G\NMC battery system with a capacity of 10,028 kWh and a maximum voltage of 864 volts, guaranteed for ten years. The BESS uses a redundant architecture with 48 battery series distributed across eight switch cabinets. Deliveries will begin in January 2023.

Scandlines PR24 zero-emission freight ferry will be 147.4 meters long, 25.4 meters wide, and 5.3 meters deep. The cargo capacity of the double-ended ferry will be 66 cargo units and carry a maximum of 140 passengers at a speed of 10 knots. As a hybrid ferry, the crossing time between the two ports will be 45 minutes. The crossing time is 70 minutes in purely electric operation, and the ferry is emission-free.
