I tweeted on the day the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 showed up in my garage that it was the most appealing vehicle I would drive this year, despite having 44 weeks of automobiles to evaluate. My opinion has not altered after a week at the helm. This thing is a hot diggity dog, both inside and out. That alone would be plenty, but the Ioniq 5 is also an absolute delight to pilot, as luxurious as anything else in its class and remarkably fully equipped.
However, that same week exposed the types of irritations that would drive me insane if I installed an Ioniq in my driveway. These faults are so minor that you would think I am crazy for being worried, but they are also so evident that I am left wondering how they got past Hyundai's design and engineering divisions. Do they wreak havoc on the Ioniq 5? Not at all — this is an ideal electric car.
The Ioniq 5 is priced at $44,000 for the rear-drive SE with the extended-range battery and 303-mile range. In April 2022, a standard-range battery will be available, lowering the Hyundai Ioniq's introductory price to $40,000. Hyundai's Ioniq price is unquestionably competitive. However, finding a dealer willing to sell you one for MSRP is another matter. The good news is that supply will soon catch up with demand, forcing dealers to cease price gouging. And Hyundai, presumably, will solve the niggles raised here. When it occurs, I will ultimately endorse the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as my favorite car in the sector.
